Possible Duplicate: Are collective nouns constantly plural, or are details ones singular? i m sorry is correct: The remainder of the employee is or are? The rest of my family members is or are?

I"ve done a bit of research and also I know that "family" should be preceded by singular or plural verb depending upon how you want it to be treated. For example,

His family is one of the earliest in the county.

You are watching: I and my family

and

His household are all doctors.

These are supposedly both correct.

But in the following instance, could a grammar experienced tell me which must be be?

When his household are abducted

or

When his family is abducted

?

Thanks.

In American londonchinatown.org, cumulative nouns are practically always treated together singular. In brothers londonchinatown.org, it often depends on whether the speaker/writer watch the noun as a unit or as individuals. That seems to loss the purpose of cumulative nouns, but that is how it is.

It counts on even if it is you can slot words "members" into the sentence or not.

"His household are all doctors" works well enough, therefore you have the right to use are.

"His household is among the oldest in the county" doesn"t really work so friend can"t use are.

Then over there is the "one" in your example, which type of pressures it to be singular, but even "His family members space the earliest in the county" is a bit odd, unless the family members space all 110+.

It would again rely on exactly how the household was viewed. It could be ‘His household were abducted one by one’ or it might be ‘His entire family to be abducted when he was away.’
