It's one old trick question, human being often confuse mass and density and assume steel is the correct answer.

You are watching: Which is heavier

Strictly speaking, a kilogram is no an unit that "heaviness", however of mass. Depending upon your meaning of "heavy", a kilogram of steel deserve to be heavier. That's due to the fact that a kilogram of feathers is larger, and also thus more buyoant in the neighboring air.

For example, if the 2 sit ~ above a communication at sea level in the atmosphere, the steel kg exerts a greater pressure on the platform, or "feels heavier" for the platform.

For an instance that much better shows the effects of buyoancy: a kilogram the helium balloons vs a kilogram of steel.

That's the dumbest thing I've read in a while. The question was "An oz of feathers or an oz of gold".

At no point was it said "An oz of feathers and a troy ounce that gold".

That's like saying "What's heavier, an ounce of feathers or an oz of gold" and also the answer being "The feathers! Feathers room measured in tons, therefore an ton-ounce of feathers is heavier".

A troy ounce of feathers is the same as a troy ounce of gold BTW, therefore the prize is the same.

Precious steels are weighed using Troy ounces

Except, ya know, when they're not, choose in the paper definition of this question. A scale doesn't sense as soon as you placed precious steels on it and convert from the usual standard.

I'd tell you it's favor saying that a dozen doughnuts is an ext than a dozen eggs since a baker's dozen is in reality 13, however I'm concerned you'd agree with me, quite than gain the point.

They room wrong. Or possibly referring come the feather metaphor where friend lie and also they spread and you have the right to never gain them every back

They space wrong

Seriously counts on the context.

In a physics class "steel is heavier" will be correct because of several reasons.

Let's speak the question is "you've acquired steel with the massive of one kg and also fathers with the very same mass and put castle on a scale below on earth. I beg your pardon one weighs more?".

See more: How To Make A Cursive O Lowercase Cursive “O”, Calligraphy Alphabet Cursive O

Now to someone v grade school knowledge if physics it's apparent that it's a trick question, but to physicists it's apparent that buoyancy and gravity both have actually an effect. (feathers need much more space, for this reason the facility of mass is further away native the facility of mass of earth compared to the center of mass of steel)

tl;dr: it's a trick concern unless you study physics
